How We Research

Your Best Mattress is an independent research site covering mattresses, adjustable beds, foundations and bedding for the US market — every guide we publish is here. This page explains exactly how we decide what to recommend, so you can judge whether our recommendations are worth anything to you.

What we are, and what we are not

We are a small research team. We are not a retailer, we do not run a showroom, and we do not hold inventory. That means we have no reason to steer you toward whatever is sitting in a warehouse.

We are also not a lab. We do not put mattresses on force plates or measure motor noise in decibels. Sites that do that work are useful and we will point you to them where their testing is better than our reasoning. What we do instead is read specifications carefully, understand how these products are built, and read customer reviews at a volume no individual buyer has time for.

How we pick products

  1. Specifications first. For an adjustable base that means weight capacity, motor count, wall-hug and remote type. For a mattress it means construction, thickness and whether it flexes. Features that sound impressive but do not change how the product performs get ignored.
  2. Review volume over review score. A 4.7 rating across 300 reviews tells you less than a 4.4 across 4,000. On motorised products especially, we weight the number of units in the wild heavily, because that is what surfaces failure rates.
  3. Verified on the date shown. Every rating and review count we publish was read from the retailer on a date we state in the article. These numbers move. We re-check them rather than letting them go stale silently.
  4. We say who a product is wrong for. Most buying guides only tell you who should buy something. The more useful half is who should not, and we include it.

How we handle claims we cannot back up

Sleep products attract a lot of confident health claims. Our rule is simple: where there is good evidence, we cite it. Where there is mechanism and clinical practice but not a strong body of trials, we say that explicitly rather than implying more certainty than exists. Where a claim is marketing, we call it marketing.

Nothing on this site is medical advice. If you have back pain, sleep apnea or any other condition, the person to talk to is a clinician, not a mattress site.

How we make money

We earn a commission when a reader buys through our links, at no extra cost to you. That is the entire business model — we take no payment for placement, no sponsored reviews and no brand fees. The full terms are in the affiliate disclosure.

The obvious question is whether commission influences what we recommend. The honest answer is that it creates an incentive, and the way we manage it is procedural: products are selected on specification and verified review volume before commission is considered, and we recommend against buying when that is the right answer, including when it costs us the sale.

Corrections

If something here is wrong, we want to fix it: tell us which guide and what is wrong with it through the contact page, and corrections jump the queue. Specifications change, products get discontinued, and we make mistakes like anyone else. Articles carry a last-updated date so you can see how current the information is.
