Short answer: a bunkie board adds support without adding height. A box spring adds support and 9 inches of height. If your bed is already the right height and the slats are too far apart, you want the board. If the bed is too low, or the frame has no surface at all, you want the box spring.
They are not competing products. They solve two different halves of the same problem, and plenty of beds need one, some need the other, and a few need neither.

Decide with two measurements

- The gap between your slats. Under 3 inches, you need neither. Between 3 and 6, a bunkie board. Over 6, a box spring or new slats, because a thin panel flexes too much across a gap that wide under load.
- The height of your sleep surface. Measure from the floor to the top of the mattress. Most adults are comfortable between 24 and 26 inches, roughly knee height. If you are under that, the box spring earns its cost by fixing two problems at once. If you are already there, adding 9 inches makes the bed worse.
Do the height measurement before you shop, not after. It is the one that turns a support decision into a comfort decision, and it is the reason low profile foundations exist.
By what is under your mattress right now
- Slats under 3 inches apart: neither. The frame is doing the job. See do you need a box spring for the frame by frame version of this.
- Slats 3 to 6 inches apart, bed at a good height: bunkie board. This is the case it was designed for.
- Slats 3 to 6 inches apart, bed too low: box spring, or a bunkie board plus bed risers if you want to keep the cost down.
- Bare rails, nothing across them: box spring or a foundation. A bunkie board has nothing to rest on and will bow in the middle.

- Bunk bed or trundle: bunkie board. There is no vertical room for anything else, which is where the name comes from.
- Adjustable base: neither. Both stop the base bending, as we cover in choosing a mattress for an adjustable bed.
Does the mattress type change the answer?
It changes how strict you need to be about the slat gap, not which product you buy.
- Memory foam is the least forgiving. It has no internal structure spanning the gaps, so it sinks into every one. Treat 3 inches as the hard limit and see how long memory foam lasts for what unsupported foam does over time.

- Innerspring is the most tolerant, and the only type where a sprung box spring adds something beyond support.
The plywood question
A cut sheet of plywood is structurally close to a bunkie board and costs less. Two things make it worse in practice, and both are fixable.
- Moisture. A sleeper releases moisture overnight and it moves downward through a foam mattress. Solid plywood traps it against the underside. Drill a grid of one inch holes about eight inches apart, or expect a musty smell within a year.
- Splinters. Cut edges work through the mattress cover. Sand the edges and wrap the panel in an old fitted sheet.

Can you use both?
Rarely, and only for one reason: a box spring whose top surface has started to sag. Laying a board across it flattens the surface again and buys a couple of years. It is a repair, not a design. If the foundation has gone soft, the mattress on top has usually taken damage too, which is worth checking against how often you should replace your mattress. Common questions
Does a bunkie board replace a box spring? For support, yes, as long as there are slats or rails under it to rest on. For height, no. That is the whole difference.
Can you put a mattress directly on a bunkie board? Yes. That is how it is meant to be used: frame, slats, board, mattress.
What are the downsides of a bunkie board? It adds no height, which is a problem on a bed that is already low. A solid one restricts airflow under a foam mattress. And it does nothing on a frame with no slats or rails to support it.
Bunkie board or low profile box spring? Board if the height is already right and you have slats. Low profile foundation if you need 4 or 5 inches, or if the frame is bare rails.
Can I just use plywood? Structurally yes. Drill ventilation holes, sand the edges, and wrap it, or you trade a sag problem for a mold problem.
The bottom line
Measure the gap between your slats, then measure the height of your mattress top. Wide gaps and a good height point to a bunkie board. Wide gaps and a low bed, or no slats at all, point to a box spring. Price is the last thing to look at, because the two products are not interchangeable in the first place.
