Short answer: when it fails the tests below, not when it hits a birthday. The “every seven to ten years” figure you see everywhere comes from mattress retailers, and it is a reasonable average dressed up as a rule. A well-supported latex mattress at twelve years can be fine. A cheap foam one at four can be finished.

Typical lifespan by type
| Type | Realistic range | How it fails |
|---|---|---|
| Memory foam | 6-8 years | Softens gradually everywhere until support is gone |
| Hybrid (pocketed coils) | 7-10 years | A local dip where you sleep, as a coil section weakens |
| Latex | 10-15 years | Slow surface softening. The longest-lived type |
| Traditional innerspring | 5-7 years | Coils lose tension, padding compresses, you start feeling the springs |
| Pillow-top | 5-7 years | The pillow top flattens years before the core does |
Foam density and your body weight move these more than the type does, the detail is in how long memory foam mattresses last. Pillow tops are the shortest lived of the constructions, and what is a pillow top mattress explains why the soft layer goes first.
The five tests
1. The straight edge test
Lay a broom handle or a long spirit level across the mattress where you sleep, running head to foot. Look at the gap underneath. Less than half an inch is normal settling. More than an inch means the support layer has gone and no topper will fix it.
2. The recovery test
Get out of bed in the morning and look at your impression. Foam should be back to flat within a minute or two. Springs should be immediate. A body outline still visible after five minutes means the material has stopped rebounding.
3. The morning stiffness test
Do you wake up stiff or sore, and does it clear within twenty to thirty minutes of getting up and moving? That specific pattern, bad on waking, fine by the time you have had coffee. Points at the sleeping surface rather than at an injury or a condition. If the pain persists all day, that is a conversation with a doctor, not a mattress purchase.
4. The other-bed test
Did you sleep noticeably better in a hotel, at a relative’s house, or in your spare room? This is the most reliable single signal there is, because it controls for everything else in your life. If other beds are consistently better, yours is the problem.
5. The allergy test
Waking congested, sneezing or itchy-eyed and improving once you leave the bedroom suggests an accumulation of dust mites and allergens. This one is often fixable without replacing anything: a zippered encasement plus a proper clean usually settles it. Try that before you spend on a mattress.
One failed test can be something else. Two or more and it is the mattress. If the dip is under an inch and the mattress is otherwise sound, how to fix a sagging mattress covers what can be rescued.
What is not a reason to replace it
- Age alone. If it passes all five tests at ten years, keep it.
- It feels too firm or too soft, but is flat. That is a comfort layer problem and a topper solves it for a fraction of the cost. See mattress pad vs topper.
- Stains. Cosmetic. Cleanable, and then coverable, see how to clean a memory foam mattress.
- It sags between the slats of your bed frame. That is the base failing, not the mattress. A solid platform or a bunkie board fixes it, and it will destroy the new mattress too if you do not.
That last one is worth checking before you buy anything. An unsupported mattress on wide-spaced slats fails years early, and people replace the mattress twice before working out that the base was the problem.
How to make the next one last longer
- Rotate head to foot every three months. Only flip it if it is a double-sided mattress, which most modern ones are not.
- Support it properly. Solid platform or slats no more than three inches apart.
- Protect it from day one. Sweat and body oils break down foam and compress padding. A SafeRest waterproof protector (4.6, ~280,400 ratings) is the standard choice; the Utopia zippered encasement (4.6, ~133,000) is the one to get if allergens are your issue.
If it is time
Match the replacement to how you sleep rather than buying the same thing again. The decision framework is in memory foam vs hybrid, and if you are heavier than average the answer is usually different, see the guide for heavier sleepers. Plan the exit of the old one before the new one arrives, which is in how to get rid of a mattress, and if you are buying online the boxed format is explained in best mattress in a box.
