Mattress Pad vs Topper: Which One Do You Need?

Updated September 7, 2026
Stacked layers of folded fabric in different thicknesses

Short answer: a topper changes how the mattress feels. A pad adds a thin layer of comfort and some protection. A protector only protects. If your mattress is too firm, you want a topper. If you want to keep it clean, you want a protector. A pad sits in between and does neither job especially well. How thick that topper should be is a separate decision, made in how thick should a mattress topper be.

Most guides treat this as two products. It is three, and that is where people buy the wrong thing.

The three products, side by side

Changes how the bed feels? No Slightly Yes, substantially
Fits like Fitted sheet, or a zippered encasement Fitted sheet with elastic skirt Loose slab, or straps at the corners
Machine washable Yes Usually yes No, if it is foam
Typical spend Lowest Low Highest of the three

Pick by what is bothering you

  • “My mattress is too firm.” Topper, 2-3 inches of memory foam. This is the one job a pad cannot do.
  • “My mattress is too soft / I roll into a dip.” Neither. A topper on a sagging mattress reproduces the sag. Check it with the straight-edge test in how often you should replace your mattress, if it dips more than an inch, you need a new mattress, not a layer.
  • “I sleep hot.” Cooling topper, or nothing. Be aware that adding any layer between you and the mattress usually makes heat slightly worse, not better, so treat a cooling topper as damage limitation.
  • “I want to keep it clean.” Protector. Cheapest item here and the one that pays for itself.
  • “Bed bugs or dust mites.” Zippered encasement specifically, not a fitted protector. It has to seal all six sides.
  • “I just want it a bit plusher.” Pad. This is the narrow case where a pad is the right answer.
  • “Kids, pets, or someone who is ill.” Waterproof protector, plus a washable pad on top if you want a second line.

Can you use more than one?

Yes, and the order matters. From the mattress upward: protector, then topper, then a second protector or fitted sheet over the top. Putting the protector over the topper is what most people do and it is the wrong way round. The topper is the expensive item and the one you cannot wash, so it needs to be the one being protected.

If you are on an adjustable base, add one more consideration: every extra layer makes the surface slightly less willing to bend, and loose toppers slide off an articulating mattress. Straps or a deep-pocket fitted sheet over the top are not optional there, see sheets for adjustable beds. If the topper is already creeping on a flat bed, the six fixes are ranked in how to keep a mattress topper from sliding.

What we would tell a friend

A topper is a real fix for a mattress that is the wrong firmness and a poor substitute for one that has collapsed. If yours is under about five years old and too hard, spend on a topper and you will be pleased. If it is eight years old and dipped, a topper buys you a few months of feeling slightly better while the underlying problem gets worse. The replacement decision is in memory foam vs hybrid. A topper is also the replaceable alternative to a sewn on pillow top, which we explain in what is a pillow top mattress.

Everyone, regardless: buy the protector. It is the cheapest item in the bedroom and it adds years to whatever is underneath it, for the reasons covered in how long memory foam mattresses last.
