Most mattresses sold today fall into four categories. Each one feels different the moment you lie down:

- Hybrid — pocket coils on the bottom, foam on top. The most balanced feel, good for couples and combination sleepers.
- Innerspring — coils with a thin comfort layer. Bouncy, cool, very affordable. Great for guest rooms and kids.
- Latex — natural rubber foam. Springy, durable, breathable. The most expensive of the four.
Firmness by sleep position
Use your dominant sleep position to narrow it down — not your bodyweight alone:
- Side sleepers — soft to medium. Your hips and shoulders need to sink in to keep your spine aligned.
- Back sleepers — medium to medium-firm. Enough push-back to keep the lower back from collapsing.
