Short answer: side sleepers need a high-loft, firm pillow, usually 4 to 6 inches thick, that fills the gap between your ear and the outside of your shoulder without collapsing. Softness is not the variable. Height that survives the night is.
Every guide to this hands you a list of pillows. None of them tells you the one number that makes the choice objective, which is the gap you personally need to fill. Measure it first and the list gets a lot shorter.

Measure your gap in two minutes
Lie on your side on your mattress, in your normal position, with no pillow. Have someone measure the vertical distance from the surface of the mattress to the outside edge of your ear. That distance is the space your pillow has to fill.
- Most adults measure 4 to 6 inches.
- Broader shoulders measure more, 6 to 7 inches is common.
- A softer mattress reduces the number, because your shoulder sinks into it. This is why the same pillow feels right on one bed and wrong on another, and why changing your mattress often means changing your pillow.
Then buy a pillow with a stated loft close to that figure, and expect to lose roughly half an inch to compression once you lie on it.
Why softness is the wrong thing to optimise
A soft pillow feels lovely for the first thirty seconds and then flattens under the weight of your head. By the time you are asleep, your neck is bent sideways toward the mattress and it stays there for hours. That is the origin of most “I woke up with a stiff neck” mornings.
What you want is a pillow that resists. Firm and high, not soft and thick. The two get confused constantly, and it is why so many people buy a big fluffy pillow and wake up worse.
Fill types, honestly
| Fill | Holds loft? | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Shredded memory foam | Yes, and adjustable | The best default for side sleepers. Remove or add fill to hit your number. Can sleep warm. |
| Solid memory foam / contour | Yes | Consistent height. You cannot adjust it, so the loft has to be right out of the box. |
| Latex | Yes, best of all | Springy, cool, long-lasting. Heavy and the most expensive. |
| Down and feather | No | Collapses under a side sleeper’s head weight. Needs constant re-fluffing. |
| Polyester | Briefly | Cheap, and flattens permanently within months. Fine for guests. |
The knee pillow nobody mentions
Side sleeping leaves your top leg unsupported, so it falls forward and rotates your pelvis, which twists your lower back all night. A pillow between the knees stops that, and for a lot of people it does more for morning back pain than the head pillow does.
It does not need to be a specialist product. A folded regular pillow works, but a contoured one stays put instead of migrating down the bed. The Contour Legacy leg and knee pillow (4.3, ~42,900 ratings) is the one most people end up with.
If the back pain is the main thing you are trying to solve, the position question is bigger than the pillow. See whether an adjustable bed helps back pain. If the mattress is the suspect, start with best mattress for back pain side sleepers.
Pillows worth looking at
Ratings read from Amazon on 13 August 2026.
| Pillow | Rating | Reviews | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coop Home Goods Original Adjustable | 4.5 | ~63,700 | The pick if you measured a number and want to hit it exactly. Shredded fill you add or remove until the loft matches. |
| QUTOOL Cooling Shredded Memory Foam | 4.4 | ~22,700 | Same adjustable principle with a cooling cover, for anyone who finds foam pillows warm. |
| Beckham Hotel Collection, set of 2 | 4.3 | ~263,100 | An enormous review base and a hotel feel. Down-alternative, so it will not hold loft as well. Better for combination sleepers than committed side sleepers. |
| Contour Legacy Knee Pillow | 4.3 | ~42,900 | The between-the-knees piece. Buy it with the head pillow, not six months later. |

How often to replace a pillow
Every one to two years for foam and polyester, longer for latex. The test: fold it in half and let go. If it stays folded instead of springing back, the fill is done.
It is worth replacing on schedule because a flattened pillow undoes the mattress you paid for. A perfect mattress with a collapsed pillow still gives you a bent neck. Pillowcases go in the wash weekly with the sheets, see how often you should wash your sheets.
The pillow is downstream of the mattress
One thing worth knowing before you buy: your correct pillow loft depends on how far your shoulder sinks, so it changes when the mattress does. If you are also planning to replace the mattress, buy that first and measure afterwards. Otherwise you will buy the pillow twice. Pick that mattress firmness with what firmness is best for side sleepers.
For side sleepers the mattress question usually points toward memory foam, for the pressure-relief reasons set out in memory foam vs hybrid. If the surface is nearly right and only slightly too firm, a topper is the cheaper route.
