Memory Foam vs Hybrid Mattress: Which Should You Buy?

Updated September 7, 2026

Short answer: memory foam if you sleep on your side, sleep alone or with a restless partner, and want to be cradled. Hybrid if you sleep on your back or stomach, weigh more than about 230 lb, sleep hot, or you want to be able to move on the bed without climbing out of a dent.

Almost every guide to this question ends on “it depends on your preferences”, which is true and useless. It does depend, but on things you already know about yourself. Here is the decision, made.

Ratings and review counts were read from Amazon on 13 August 2026 and change over time. How we research explains how we pick what to recommend.

What each one is

Memory foam is layers of viscoelastic foam over a denser support foam base. No springs anywhere. It softens with your body heat and moulds to your shape, which is where the cradling feeling comes from.

Hybrid is a layer of pocketed springs, each coil wrapped separately, with foam or latex comfort layers on top. It is not the old innerspring mattress with a pad. The pocketing is the whole point: the coils move independently, so you get support from steel and contouring from foam.

If you want the full construction detail, we broke it down in what a hybrid mattress is. Both constructions now ship compressed, and the format is explained in best mattress in a box.

The differences that matter

  Memory foam Hybrid
Feel Sinking, cradled, slow to respond Supported on top, springy, immediate response
Pressure relief Better. Shoulders and hips sink in Good, not as deep
Support for heavier bodies Weaker. Foam compresses and hips drop out of alignment over time Better. Steel does not fatigue the way foam does
Heat Warmer. Foam wraps you and traps heat, even gel versions Cooler. Air moves through the coil layer
Motion transfer Best in class. You will not feel a partner move Good with pocketed coils, not as absolute
Edge support Weak. Sitting on the edge collapses it Strong. Matters if you sit on the bed to dress
Ease of moving on it Harder. You have to climb out of the impression Easier. Relevant for anyone with mobility or joint issues
Weight Heavy Heavier
Adjustable base Works perfectly Works if the coils are pocketed

The criterion nobody mentions: your body weight

This decides it more often than sleeping position does, and it is missing from every page currently ranking for this search. For side sleepers specifically, the firmness number by build is in what firmness is best for side sleepers.

  • Under about 130 lb: you may not sink into a hybrid enough to get pressure relief. Memory foam, or a softer hybrid.
  • 130 to 230 lb: genuine coin flip. Decide on feel and heat.
  • Over about 230 lb: hybrid, in most cases. Foam has to be denser and thicker to support more weight, and cheap foam mattresses compress permanently under it. We went into this in the guide for heavier sleepers.

By sleeping position

  • Side: memory foam usually wins. Your shoulder and hip need somewhere to go, and foam gives them that.
  • Back: either, leaning hybrid. You want the lumbar curve supported, not filled in.
  • Stomach: hybrid, firmer. Foam lets your hips sink and arches your lower back all night. See why stomach sleepers need something firmer.
  • Combination: hybrid. Foam’s slow response fights you every time you turn over.

Do hybrids sleep cooler?

Yes, and the difference is real rather than marketing. Air moves through a coil layer; it cannot move through a solid foam core. Gel infusions and open-cell foams narrow the gap but do not close it.

The caveat is that the comfort layer matters as much as the core. A hybrid with four inches of dense memory foam on top will sleep warmer than a thinner all-foam mattress. If heat is your main complaint, look at the top layer, not just the label. We rank the constructions that run coolest in best cooling mattress.

Which lasts longer?

Hybrids, generally, and the failure modes are different. Foam degrades by softening. Gradually, everywhere, until one day the support is gone and you cannot point to when it happened. Hybrids fail locally: a coil section weakens where you sleep, and you get a dip.

Practical consequence: a sagging hybrid is more obvious earlier, which sounds worse but means you replace it before your back complains for a year. We covered the timelines in how long memory foam mattresses last. The maintenance that keeps foam going is in how to clean a memory foam mattress.

What we would do

Side sleeper under 230 lb, sleeps cold, shares the bed with someone restless: memory foam, and stop reading. Everyone else, and especially anyone over 230 lb or who sleeps hot: hybrid. Side sleeper with back pain: the answer changes, see best mattress for back pain side sleepers.

If you already own one and it is only the surface you dislike. Too firm, too warm. A topper is a fraction of the cost of replacing the mattress. That is a different decision, covered in mattress pad vs topper.
