Short answer: six to eight years for most, and the number is decided almost entirely by foam density. A cheap 3 lb/ft³ comfort layer is soft and sagging in four to five years. A 5 lb/ft³ layer holds up for ten. The price tag correlates with this, but the spec sheet tells you directly.

Lifespan by foam density
Density is measured in pounds per cubic foot and describes how much material is packed into the foam. More material means more to compress before the structure gives up. It is not the same as firmness, a dense foam can be soft.
| Comfort layer density | Typical lifespan | Where you find it |
|---|---|---|
| Under 3 lb/ft³ | 3-5 years | Budget boxed mattresses, most toppers |
| 3-4 lb/ft³ | 6-8 years | The mainstream. Most mattresses on Amazon |
| 4-5 lb/ft³ | 8-10 years | Upper mid-range |
| Over 5 lb/ft³ | 10+ years | Premium, and heavy to move |
If the listing does not state density, that is informative in itself. Manufacturers publish the number when it flatters them.
What else changes the number
- Your body weight. The single biggest multiplier after density. Above roughly 230 lb, subtract two to three years from any estimate, which is why heavier sleepers should look at hybrids rather than all-foam.
- Whether it is supported properly. Foam needs a solid or closely-slatted base. Slats more than three inches apart let the foam sag between them, and you will see the pattern of your bed frame in the mattress within two years. If your base is questionable, that is what a bunkie board fixes.
- Sleeping in the same spot every night. Unavoidable, but rotating the mattress spreads it.
- Heat and humidity. Foam degrades faster warm. A mattress protector that traps sweat against it does not help.
Four signs yours is finished
- A visible dip. Lay a straight edge, a broom handle works, across the mattress where you sleep. More than about an inch of gap under it means the support layer has gone.
- The impression does not recover. Get up and watch. New memory foam returns to flat in under a minute. If your body shape is still there after five, the cells have collapsed.
- You wake up stiff and it clears within half an hour of getting up. That specific pattern points at the mattress rather than at you.
- You sleep better elsewhere. A hotel bed or a spare room feeling noticeably better is the most reliable signal there is.
One of those can be something else. Two or more together and it is the mattress. There is a broader checklist in how often you should replace your mattress. The repairs that work on a shallow dip are in how to fix a sagging mattress.
How to make it last longer
None of this rescues a collapsed mattress, but on a new one it buys you years. Cleaning it without soaking it is a separate skill, in how to clean a memory foam mattress.
- Rotate head to foot every three months. Do not flip a memory foam mattress, the comfort layer is only on one side, and sleeping on the base foam is worse than the sag you were avoiding.
- Support it properly. Solid platform, or slats no more than three inches apart.
- Use a breathable protector. Sweat and body oils break foam down. A waterproof protector that does not breathe traps heat instead, which trades one problem for another. The SafeRest waterproof protector (4.6, ~280,400 ratings. One of the largest review bases in the category) is the standard answer here.
- Keep the room cooler. Foam that spends every night warm softens faster.
Can a topper buy you time?
It depends on which layer failed, and this is worth getting right before you spend. Thickness matters too, and the rule is in how thick should a mattress topper be.
If the comfort layer has softened but the mattress is still flat and supportive underneath, a topper works and costs a tenth of a replacement. If the support core has sagged, a topper sits on top of the dip and reproduces it. You will feel the hollow through it within a week.
Use the straight-edge test above. Flat but soft means topper. Dipped means replace. The difference between the product types is in mattress pad vs topper.
If a topper is the answer, the Linenspa 2 inch gel memory foam topper (4.5, ~74,600 ratings) is the volume pick. Put a deep pocket sheet over both layers or it will migrate, see how to keep a mattress topper from sliding.
When it is time to replace
Buy on density if you are staying with foam, or move to a hybrid if you are heavier than average or sleep hot. The reasoning is in memory foam vs hybrid. Getting the old one out of the house is in how to get rid of a mattress.
- Novilla Bliss 12″ Gel Memory Foam, 4.4, ~31,450 ratings. The default replacement.
- LUCID 14″ Medium Firm Gel Memory Foam, 4.4, ~12,400. Thicker, firmer, more foam to compress before you notice.
