How to Fix a Sagging Mattress (And When You Cannot)

Short answer: find out first whether the mattress is sagging or the thing underneath it is. Roughly a third of the time the mattress is fine and the foundation, the slats or a missing center leg have given way, and that costs a fraction to fix. If the mattress itself has compressed, a topper will change the feel but not restore the support, and a dip over an inch and a half deep is not repairable. If it is the base, the fix is a rigid panel or a new foundation, compared in box spring vs bunkie board.

Measure before you buy anything. The measurement is also what a warranty claim runs on, and there is real money in that.

Step 1: is it the mattress or the base?

  1. Strip the bed and take everything off the mattress.
  2. Move the mattress to the floor. Lay a straight edge across it and look for the dip. If the mattress is flat on the floor, it is not the mattress.
  3. Look at what it was resting on. A bowed slat, a cracked foundation panel, or a missing center support leg on a queen or larger. The center leg is the single most common cause of a dip down the middle, and it is covered in do you need a box spring.
  4. Measure the slat gaps. Over 3 inches and the foam has been settling into them for years. That damage is done, and preventing more of it is a bunkie board.

Step 2: measure the dip the way a warranty does

US mattress warranties define a defect as a sag deeper than a stated figure, usually somewhere between three quarters of an inch and an inch and a half, measured with nothing on the bed. Manufacturers ask for this exact procedure, so it is worth doing it their way.

  1. Strip the mattress completely, including the protector and any topper.
  2. Lay a straight edge or a taut string across the width at the deepest point.
  3. Measure from the string down to the mattress surface.
  4. Photograph it with a tape measure in the frame.
  5. Photograph what is under the mattress as well, because the first thing a claim asks for is proof that the support met the requirement.
Depth What it means
Under 0.5 in Normal body impression. Not a fault, and a topper will make it comfortable
0.5 to 1 in Real wear. Fixable by feel, not by structure. Check your warranty threshold
1 to 1.5 in At or over most warranty limits. Claim before you spend on fixes
Over 1.5 in Not repairable. Anything on top follows the dip within weeks

The fixes that work

  • Fix the base. Add the missing center leg, replace the broken slat, close the gaps. If the base was the cause, this is the whole repair and the mattress may recover part of its shape over a few weeks.
  • Support the mattress from below. A rigid panel across the frame under the sag spreads the load and stops it deepening. A bunkie board does this cleanly, and a sheet of drilled plywood does the same job if you sand the edges and add ventilation holes.
  • Rotate it 180 degrees. Head to foot, every three months. It moves the load to a part of the mattress that has not been carrying it. This is maintenance more than repair, and it works best before the sag is obvious.
  • Add a topper, for feel only. A topper over a shallow dip evens out the surface. Over a deep one it drapes into the hollow and you feel the same shape through it. A firmer, denser topper bridges better than a soft one, so the 4 inch ventilated memory foam topper does more here than a 2 inch plush one. The difference between the layers is in mattress pad vs topper.

The fixes that do not

  • Flipping it, unless it is a rare two sided mattress. Almost everything sold in the US since 2000 is one sided, and a pillow top is one sided by definition.
  • Putting pillows or towels in the hollow. They compress within a night and create a lumpy surface instead of a smooth dip.
  • Leaving it in the sun. This gets repeated online for memory foam. Heat does not restore crushed cell structure, and UV degrades foam and cover fabric.
  • Adding a box spring on top of a platform bed to “level” it. It changes the height, not the dip, as we go through in can you put a box spring on a platform bed.

Why it sagged, so it does not happen again

  • Support underneath. Slats too far apart or a foundation past its own life. Box springs sag on their own at around eight to ten years.
  • Load per square inch. Two heavier sleepers in the same spots compress foam faster than the specification assumed. What to buy instead is in mattresses for heavy people.
  • Low density comfort foam. The softer the surface, the sooner the impression, which is the durability argument in firm mattress vs plush.
  • Sitting in the same place. Sitting on the edge to dress concentrates your whole weight on a few square inches, and edge collapse starts there.

When to stop repairing

Two signals. A dip over an inch and a half, because nothing on top of it stays level. And back pain that is worst on waking and eases within an hour, which is the pattern that means the bed is holding your spine out of line, as we set out in the back pain firmness chart.

At that point the question becomes replacement, and the timeline is in how often you should replace your mattress. Firmer builds resist this failure longest: the BedStory 14 inch firm hybrid and the SLEEP100 five zone firm both put support where sagging starts. And when it is finished, how to get rid of a mattress lists the free routes before the paid ones.

Common questions

Can a sagging mattress be repaired? The support under it can be repaired and a shallow impression can be evened out with a topper. Compressed foam does not come back, so a deep sag is not a repair job.

Will a foam topper help a sagging mattress? It changes how the surface feels, not what the mattress supports. Over a dip under half an inch it works well. Over an inch it follows the hollow.

How do I fix a mattress that dips in the middle? Check for a missing center support leg first. On a queen or larger that is the most common cause, it is a cheap part, and it is also the clause a warranty claim gets declined on.

Why is my mattress sagging after 3 years? Usually low density comfort foam, support underneath that was never adequate, or load above what the build was designed for. Three years is early, which makes it worth measuring and checking the warranty rather than replacing.

Is it safe to sleep on a sagging mattress? There is no acute danger. What it does is hold your spine out of alignment for eight hours a night, which is why the pain pattern is worst on waking.

The bottom line

Take the mattress off the base and find out which one is sagging. Then measure the dip the way a warranty claim does and photograph it. Under half an inch, a topper solves it. Between half an inch and an inch and a half, check your warranty before spending anything. Over that, no fix holds and the money belongs in the replacement.
