Short answer: a hybrid with pocketed coils, 12 to 14 inches tall, with reinforced edges and a comfort layer of at least 4 lb/ft³ foam. All-foam mattresses under that density compress permanently, and the failure shows up in two to three years rather than eight.
Almost every mattress on the market is designed and tested around an average sleeper. That is not a conspiracy, it is volume. But it means the specifications that matter to you are the ones manufacturers publish least clearly. Here is what to look for and why.

Why standard mattresses fail earlier under more weight
Three separate things wear out, in this order:
- The comfort foam compresses permanently. Foam recovers from compression up to a point. Past that point the cell walls collapse and it never returns. More weight reaches that point sooner, which is why density matters more than thickness.
- The edges go first. The perimeter takes concentrated load every time you sit down to put on shoes. Unreinforced edges roll under, and then getting in and out of bed becomes awkward.
- The support core dips. On foam this is a gradual sag; on coils it is a local weakening where you sleep.
The specifications to check
| Spec | Look for | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Construction | Hybrid with pocketed coils | Steel does not fatigue the way foam does. This is the single biggest factor, see memory foam vs hybrid. |
| Coil gauge | 12-13 gauge (lower number = thicker wire) | Thicker wire resists deformation. Most consumer mattresses use 14-15 gauge. |
| Foam density | 4 lb/ft³ or higher in the comfort layer | Below 4 and the layer flattens fast. Density is not the same as firmness. |
| Height | 12-14 inches | More material between you and the base. Under 10 inches you will feel the support core. |
| Edge support | Reinforced perimeter or a firmer edge coil row | The first thing to fail and the most annoying. |
| Firmness | Medium-firm to firm | A mattress that feels medium at 150 lb feels soft at 280 lb. Buy one step firmer than the label suggests. |
The number nobody publishes
Most mattresses do not state a weight limit at all, and where a limit exists it is usually on the foundation rather than the mattress. That is the more useful figure anyway, and it is the one to check first. See the section below.
The bed frame is what breaks
This is the part the niche mattress brands ranking for this search leave out, because they sell mattresses.
A mattress under-specified for your weight wears out slowly and you get warning. A bed frame under-specified for your weight fails suddenly, usually at a slat or a centre support. Check the combined figure: your weight, plus anyone sharing the bed, plus the mattress itself, which is 70 to 120 lb for a queen hybrid.
- Slatted frames: slats no more than three inches apart, with a centre support leg on anything queen or larger. Wide-spaced slats let even a good mattress sag between them.
- If your slats are too far apart, the fix is cheap: a bunkie board spreads the load across the whole surface for a fraction of a new frame.
- Adjustable bases: check the rated capacity and leave headroom, since the rating is static and does not account for someone sitting down on a raised head section. The specs are in our adjustable base guide.
Mattresses worth looking at
Ranked on construction and thickness first, then verified review volume. Ratings read from Amazon on 13 August 2026. All of them ship compressed, and the boxed format is covered in best mattress in a box, including the weight to expect at the door.
| Mattress | Rating | Reviews | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| BedStory 14″ Firm Hybrid, Queen | 4.3 | ~911 | Hybrid, 14 inches, sold as firm. The construction is right: coils plus height plus a firm surface. |
| SLEEP100 Deep Sleep 5-Zone Firm | 4.4 | ~1,700 | Zoned firmness with extra lumbar and shoulder support, the zoning matters more as weight increases, because a uniform surface lets the hips drop. |
| COOL GEL Chill 14″ Memory Foam | 4.4 | ~8,300 | If you strongly prefer foam feel. Fourteen inches is the minimum sensible height for all-foam here, and expect a shorter life than the hybrid options. |
| Novilla Bliss 14″ Gel Memory Foam, King | 4.4 | ~31,400 | The largest review base of the four by a wide margin, in king. Same caveat as above on all-foam. |

Two things worth stating plainly
Firm is not the same as supportive. A cheap firm mattress is a hard surface that still bottoms out; a well-built one holds your hips level. If you can feel the base through it, it is too thin regardless of how firm it feels. If back pain is the reason you are shopping and you sleep on your side, the firmness logic is in best mattress for back pain side sleepers.
Expect a shorter service life and plan for it. Even a well-specified mattress does less time under more load. Budget on seven years rather than ten, protect it from day one, and rotate it every three months. The full lifespan picture is in how often you should replace your mattress.
A waterproof protector (4.6, ~280,400 ratings) is worth adding at purchase. Body oils and sweat accelerate foam breakdown, and that effect scales with surface contact.
