Short answer: a full is 54 by 75 inches, a queen is 60 by 80. Six inches wider and five longer, which sounds small and is not: it is the difference between 27 inches each for a couple and 30 inches each. Twenty seven inches is narrower than a crib mattress is wide, and it is why most couples end up upgrading.
For one adult a full is generous. For two it is the size you tolerate rather than the size you choose.

The numbers
| Full (double) | Queen | |
|---|---|---|
| Dimensions | 54 x 75 in | 60 x 80 in |
| Metric | 137 x 191 cm | 152 x 203 cm |
| Width per person, two sleepers | 27 in | 30 in |
| Longest comfortable sleeper | Up to about 5 ft 10 | Up to about 6 ft 2 |
| Minimum bedroom | 9 x 10 ft | 10 x 10 ft |
| Bedding availability | Good, less choice than queen | The widest choice of any size |
The five inches of length matter more than people expect. A full is 75 inches, which puts anyone near 6 ft with their feet at the edge, and it is the reason twin XL exists at 80 inches for a single sleeper.
What 27 inches each feels like
A standard twin bed is 38 inches wide for one person. On a full, two adults get 27 inches each, which is less than a single bed gives a child. In practice that means shoulders touching when both sleep on their backs, and one person waking when the other turns over.
Motion is the part that decides it. On a narrow bed there is nowhere to move to, so every turn is felt. A mattress with good motion isolation helps, and the constructions that do it best are compared in memory foam vs hybrid. It is a mitigation rather than a fix.
The real cost of the upgrade
The mattress is the smallest part of it. Count all four before deciding.
- The mattress. Usually a modest step up between the two sizes in the same model.
- The frame or base. Full frames do not adapt. If you are also changing the base, the choice between systems is in platform bed vs box spring, and whether you need a foundation at all is in do you need a box spring.
- All the bedding. Sheets, protector, duvet or comforter. None of it transfers, and the sheet sizing rules are in choosing sheets.
- Disposing of the old bed. Not free unless you plan it, as we set out in how to get rid of a mattress.
Choose the full if
- One adult sleeps in it, and you want room to spread out.
- The room is under about 10 by 10 feet, or the door and stairs make a queen a problem.
- It is a guest room used a few nights a month.
- Neither sleeper is over about 5 ft 10.
- Both of you are light sleepers who barely move, which is rarer than people think.
Choose the queen if
- Two adults sleep in it every night. This alone settles most cases.
- Either of you is over about 5 ft 10.
- A child or a pet joins at any point in the night.
- One of you moves a lot, or gets up at a different time.
- You want the widest choice of bedding and accessories, which queen has by a distance.
Two ways to make a full work
- Separate duvets. Two single duvets on one bed rather than one shared, the arrangement common in Germany and Scandinavia. It removes the tug of war entirely, which is what makes a narrow bed feel narrower, and it is worth trying before spending on a bigger bed. The layers are covered in comforter vs duvet.
- Fix the motion, not the size. If the problem is being woken rather than being cramped, a mattress that absorbs movement changes more than six inches would. The firmness side of that is in firm mattress vs plush.
What to buy
- Queen, medium firm, the safe default for two: the Vesgantti 12 inch medium firm hybrid.
- Queen, memory foam: the Novilla Bliss 12 inch gel memory foam, which isolates motion better than a hybrid does.
- Firmer, for heavier sleepers on a smaller bed: the BedStory 14 inch firm hybrid, and the reasoning is in mattresses for heavy people.
- A frame that fits either: the Hafenpo 14 inch platform frame is sold per size, so buy it with the mattress rather than before.
Common questions
Is a queen worth it over a full? For two adults, yes. Three extra inches each sounds trivial and is the difference between touching shoulders and not. For one sleeper the full is already generous.
Can two people sleep in a full? Yes, with 27 inches each, which is less than a twin bed gives one child. It works for occasional use and wears thin as a nightly arrangement.
What size mattress do most couples sleep on? Queen. It is the most common size in US homes because it fits two adults in a standard bedroom.
Is a full the same as a double? Yes. Two names for the same 54 by 75 inch size, full in the US and double elsewhere.
What is the German bed method? Two separate single duvets on one shared mattress instead of one large duvet. It is standard in much of central and northern Europe, and it removes the cover pulling that makes a narrow bed feel smaller than it is.
The bottom line
One sleeper: a full is plenty. Two sleepers every night: queen, unless the room truly cannot take it. And before you decide the bed is too small, try two separate duvets, because a good share of what feels like a size problem is a bedding problem.
